On Tuesday, May 28, staff provided an update to the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors on a
plan to implement paid firefighters in Elliston, Va.
The plan was prompted by a request from the Elliston Volunteer Fire Department for assistance in covering calls in the Elliston and Shawsville areas during weekday hours.
Montgomery County is working to fill the daytime coverage gaps in Eastern Montgomery with 12 paid firefighters. The valued volunteer firefighters at the Elliston Volunteer Fire Department will continue to cover calls in Eastern Montgomery in the evenings.
The goal of the Montgomery County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department is to hire the paid firefighter staff members to cover the Eastern Montgomery area by the fall of 2024.
