Portions of Huckleberry Trail Closed November 2025, Reopening by Late April 2026

Oct 1, 2025, 11:14 AM by Jennifer Harris
Sections of the trail will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists during project
Update: March 12, 2026

Huckleberry Trail Construction Update - March 2026 MapA portion of the Huckleberry Trail between the Uptown Christiansburg/Mall entrance and Merrimac is now open to the public, effective March 12, 2026. This newly reopened section extends the accessible trail from the Uptown Christiansburg/Mall entrance from 1 mile to approximately 1.7 miles and provides access to the restrooms at Merrimac and the Coal Mining Heritage Park.

The section of the trail between Merrimac and Hightop Road, which includes “Bridge 2” and “Bridge 3” on the map, remains under construction and is closed to both pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of the project. Due to the nature of the work, no detour is available. At this time, the anticipated reopening of this portion of the trail is late April.

###

huckleberry-trail-map-closure-nov2025-feb2026A section of the Huckleberry Trail in Montgomery County will be closed beginning November 3, 2025, for repairs to bridges and trail infrastructure.

The closure will extend from Bridge 1 (as noted on the map) to the Hightop Road area. This section of the trail is highlighted in yellow on the map.

This closure will not affect the trail entrance at Uptown Christiansburg/Mall; however, construction will begin approximately one mile from this entrance when heading toward Blacksburg. Similarly, trail access northbound from Hightop Road toward Blacksburg will remain open. Please note that Coal Mining Heritage Park will be closed during this time.

This section of the trail will be closed to both pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of the project. No detour is available due to the nature of the work. The trail is expected to reopen in March 2026.

While any trail closure is inconvenient, the winter months were selected for this project due to lower trail usage by citizens. Signage has been posted along the Huckleberry Trail in both Blacksburg and Christiansburg to indicate the closed portion of the trail. The estimated cost for this extensive construction and engineering project is $1M.
